The Cook County High School Viking football team traveled to Barnum on Wednesday, October 16 to face the top-ranked Bombers in a game that was going to be an uphill battle for the winless Viking team.

After playing a close first quarter, trailing by 8, the Bombers scored a flurry of points and led the Vikings 42-8 at halftime. In the second half the Bombers inserted second team players and the Vikings played even up, as each team scored one more touchdown, finishing 48-16.

One big highlight for the Vikings was the running of fullback Jacob Schroeder. Schroeder scored both of the Viking touchdowns on long runs. The first run went 40 yards while the second dash to the goal line covered 84 yards. Schroeder also ran in the two extra points.

Once again the Vikings suffered a terrible blow when Devynn Deschampe was carried off of the field late in the third quarter with what appeared to be a broken leg. Deschampe has been a bright spot for the Vikings this season with his hard play on the line.

Vikings lose to Braham 32-6 in playoffs

The 0-8 Vikings made the long trip to Braham on Tuesday, October 22 to face the 8-0 conference champs and No. 1 seed in the playoffs in a game many considered futile.

However, the Vikings played their best football of the year and made the Bombers play hard all night, only trailing 12-6 at halftime.

During the first quarter the Vikings went 3 and out and punted on their first two offensive series, and Braham responded with two touchdowns to take a quick 12-0 lead.

Then the tide changed.

Early in second quarter the Vikings mounted a 49-yard drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by Viking fullback Jacob Schroeder.

On the ensuing kickoff the Bombers’ return man fumbled and the Vikings recovered the ball. The Vikings faced 4th down with 3 yards to go and converted a short pass to keep the drive alive. But the Vikings were stopped at Braham’s 13 yard line when they failed to convert on another 4th down try.

As snow fell the two teams came out of the locker room to start the third period. The Vikings kicked off and the Braham return man almost took it the distance. A short pass play set up an 18-yard run by Zach Dahlman and the Vikings fell behind 20-6. Braham would score two more touchdowns in the third quarter, one on a short run and one on a 7-yard pass to take a 32-6 lead going into the 4th quarter.

Although neither team scored in the last period, the Vikings’ defense stopped the Bombers on the 10-yard line and then marched the ball about 70 yards behind the running of quarterback Joe Borud and Jacob Schroeder to nearly score again. All in all it was a strong effort by the Vikings who made Braham, currently ranked 4th at state, play their starters until the final couple minutes of the game.
