Going into the sixth inning, the Vikings led Northwoods Grizzlies 8-7, but a big sixth inning by Northwoods resulted in four runs, and the Vikings fell 11-8 in a game that was up for grabs until the end.
Northwoods started the first inning with a one-nothing lead, scoring on an error.
The Vikings countered with three runs in the second. Maggie Smith hit a grounder to the shortstop and reached first and second on an errant throw. Charlet Waver struck out, but Morgan Starkey walked, and Smith reached third on a passed ball. Emmilly Myers bunted, reaching first and driving in Smith and Starkey, who beat the throw to Homeplate. Grete Youngdahl struck out looking while Myers moved to second on an error by the catcher. Amery Oberg singled, driving in Myers. Kallie Anderson was up next. Kallie singled to center, moving Oberg to second, but the inning ended when Katie Peck hit a long fly ball that was caught by the center fielder.
Northwoods scored one in the bottom of the second, and the Vikings led 3-2.
The Vikings were blanked in their turn at bat in the third while Northwoods pushed three runs across the plate to go up five to three.
Neither team scored in the fourth.
Kallie Anderson led off with a walk in the top of the fifth. Katie Peck hit into a fielder’s choice with Anderson thrown out at second while Peck was safe on first.
Amelia Brune walked and Maggie Smith walked to load the basis. Up next, Charlet Waver tripled on a long fly ball to left field, driving in Peck, Brune and Smith. Morgan Starkey was up next. She singled, but Waver was held at third. Emily Myers ground out to second and was thrown out at first, but Waver scored, and Starkey advanced to third base. With Grete Youngdahl at the plate, Starkey scored on a passed ball. Youngdahl got caught looking for a third strike. The inning ended with the Vikings leading 8-7 after the Grizzlies scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Vikings were out one, two three in the top of the sixth. Oberg flew out to the shortstop, Anderson ground out to the pitcher who threw to first, and Peck ground out to first base.
Northwoods had two quick outs in their first two at bats at the bottom of the sixth. A grounder hit to pitcher Kallie Anderson who made the throw to Myers at first base, and a catch on a pop-up to Morgan Starkey at shortstop. However, the next batter tripled and she was driven in by a single to tie the score, and then three more runs followed on an error, a double and single, which led to an 11-8 lead.
The Vikings went three and out in the top of the seventh to lose a heartbreaker 11-8.
The Vikings ended with eight hits while Northwoods had nine.
Emmalli Myers was two for three at the plate with three RBIs. Amery Oberg was two for four with one RBI, and Charlet Waver was one for three with three RBIs. Maggie Smith was one for three with a walk and scored twice. Kallie Anderson was one for three with a walk. Morgan Starkey was one for three with a walk and scored twice. Katie Peck didn’t get a hit but scored one run and Grete Youngdahl was hitless in three plate appearances. Amelia Brune walked once in three plate appearances and scored one run.
Kallie Anderson pitched for the Vikings. She allowed nine hits and 11 runs over six innings, striking out three and walking four.
