The Vikings played two games over the past week, taking one win over a team they had lost earlier to by more than 30 points and playing a top ranked team close.
Vikings beat Two Harbors
Maybe it was the fan support, or perhaps it’s eating home cooking— or maybe the young girls’ Viking basketball team is rapidly improving. Whatever the reason, the Vikings took the polish off of the Two Harbors Agates 52-50 at home on Friday, January 5. On December 8 the Vikings fell 62-29 to the same Two Harbors Agate squad at Two Harbors.
Sophia Eliasen led the team in scoring with 16 points. Ariana Poyirier made 14, Maya McHugh netted 8, Paisley Smith had 8, Alyssa Spry 5, and Emma Gesch scored 1 point in the contest.
“With a young team and a close game the girls held their composure and came out with a hard-fought win,” said head coach Kelly J. Hawsen. “We are starting to run our transition smoothly, and the girls are getting more comfortable with our offensive sets.”
Coach Hawsen praised her players for their hustle and team play.
“Paisley and Emma played great off the bench, and Maya had an outstanding game shutting down their guard and offensively scoring 8 points in a close game. Ariana never came out of the game and continued to hustle up and down the floor throughout the night. Sophie and Alyssa took turns at the point guard spot both showing the leadership and supporting their team. Abbie (Crawford) played strong against their post.
“All of the girls played their role. Even the bench stepped up and showed their enthusiasm and energy throughout the night,” said the coach.
Vikings fall to Cherry
A very talented Cherry Tigers team traveled to Grand Marais to face the Vikings on Tuesday, January 9, and the rapidly improving Vikings made a good game of it.
The Vikings trailed by 32-33 at halftime, but Cherry slowly pulled away over the second half and took the contest 64-46.
Abbie Crawford hit three 3-point shots and led the team in scoring with 14 points. Sophie Eliasen netted 13 points, Ariana Poyirier had 10, Alyssa Spry 7, Paisley Smith 6, Morgan Starkey 2, and Emma Gesch scored 2 points.
The girls play Ely at home at 1 p.m. this Saturday (Jan. 13) and then play Carlton at home on Friday, January 19 in a 4:45 p.m. game. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
