It was another busy week of volleyball as the Vikings regular season winds down and the team gets ready for the playoffs.

The Cook County High School varsity volleyball team traveled to Duluth to face the Lakeview Christian Academy Lions on Friday, October 14 and the Vikings came away as victors, winning the match in three games straight.

Game one was all Cook County as the Vikings won 25-14. The Lions were more competitive in game two, falling 25-20 and the Vikings took game three 25-16.

With the win the Vikings record is 6-6 and they are 4-5 in conference play. Lakeview Christian’s record is now 0-12 on the year.

Vikings fall to Ely

The Ely Timberwolves are on a record run this year, going unbeaten through all of the matches they have played to date. And while the Vikings fell to the Timberwolves 3-0 in Ely on Monday, October 17, the Vikings gave the Timberwolves a good game in game two.

The 6-8 CCHS Vikings were hosts to the 5-4 Silver Bay Mariners on Tuesday, October 18, and the two teams took right off from where they left off in their September 6 match played in Silver Bay. On that night the Vikings won game one 25-22, lost game two 25-21, lost game three 25-15, won game four 25-21 and then won the tie breaker 16-14. If you like volleyball with a lot of exciting, heart stopping plays, these two teams are fun to watch. And nothing was different on Tuesday except the Vikings lost three games to one. But boy were the games close and the action fast on the court.

Cook County took game one 25-21 with Katie Peck getting four of five kills in the first game. Silver Bay took the lead midway through the second game and prevailed 25-18. Game three saw the Vikings take a five-point lead 14-9, only to have Silver Bay come back and tie the match. From there it was back and forth with the Mainers getting a 26-24 win. The Mariners led much of game four but with the score 24-19 the Vikings came back to take the next four points. With the score 24-23, the Mariners won the next point and the match, which went almost two hours.

Makenzie Fairbanks had a good night setting the ball, Anna Helmerson was strong at the net and her driving serve was hard for the Mariners to handle. Kalina Dimitrova played well at the net and Maggie Smith had a couple of spikes and at least one block. Emmalli Meyers served well and had at least one spike and set her front court line mates up with nice bumps. All in all, there were a lot of players on both sides with “skin” in the game because they were diving for loose balls all night long. It was exciting to watch, and one has to wonder, will these two teams meet in the play-offs? Stay tuned to find out.

Some stats.

For the year Katie Peck has 90 kills, 14 serving aces and 139 digs. Makenzie Fairbanks has 81 assists and Maggie Smith seven blocks at the net.
