Viking volleyball team ends on a winning note

The Cook County High School girls’ volleyball team won its last volleyball match of a COVID-19 shortened season by defeating McGregor three games to none.

The Vikings traveled to McGregor to face the McGregor Mercs on Thursday, November 19.

None of the games were close, with the Vikings sweeping the Mercs 25-14, 25-17, 25-13.

Emmalli Myers was named Cook County Player of the Match. Emmalli finished with five kills, one ace serve, and 15 digs. Molly Lavigne finished with 20 set assists, seven digs, and one ace. Morgan Starkey had one ace, eight digs, and six kills.

Senior Paisley Smith, playing her last match for the Vikings, finished with seven kills, nine digs, and 10 set assists. Katie Peck had eight kills and two digs. Rhonnie Poyirier had one kill, and Raeanne Silence had one dig.

With Minnesota Governor Tim Walz suspending youth sports for the foreseeable future, this was the Vikings’ last game.

All of the Vikings are returning next year except for Paisley Smith, the lone senior. Paisley led the team in kills with 75; ace serves, 27; 10 solo blocks, and 11 assisted blocks at the net, and tied for the team lead in blocks with Molly Lavigne. Paisley also finished with 59 digs.

The Vikings ended with five wins and five losses.

Year-end stats for the rest of the team:

Molly Lavigne, a junior, finished with 17 kills, 62 digs, 11 ace serves, 156 assists, and far and away led the team in the ball-handling attempts (BHA) category with 674.

Charlet Waver, a junior, had 14 ace serves for the season, 114 digs, nine assists, 62 BHA, and 34 kills.

Sophomore Emmalli Meyers ended with 30 kills, 12 ace serves, 51 assists, and 39 digs.

Morgan Starkey, a junior, completed her season with 152 digs, 23 ace serves, four assists, and 62 kills.

Katie Peck, a sophomore, ended with 48 kills, 21 ace serves, 39 digs, four assists, three blocks and three assisted blocks.

Kamryn Johnson, a freshman, had 43 digs, three assists, 13 BHA, and one ace serves.

Sadie Wilson, a junior, ended with 136 digs, seven assists, and 43 ball handling attempts.

Makenzie Fairbanks, a sophomore, had 11 digs, RaeAnne Silence, a sophomore, 35 digs and nine BHA, and Rhonnie Poyirier, a junior, 10 BHA, ten digs, and seven kills.
