The Viking girls’ volleyball team is again off to a great start, defeating Duluth Marshall 3-0 on Thursday, September 1 and then coming back to beat the Silver Bay Mariners 3-0 on Wednesday, September 7. Both games were played at home in front of a packed house.

Duluth Marshall put up a good fight, but the Vikings took the first game 25-18, followed by a 25-14 win and again, beat Marshall 25-18 to close out the match.

Bekah Laky had 20 set assists (SA) against the Hilltoppers, while Ashley Deschampe had 18 kills and 10 digs. Ali Iverson had a great all-around game, finishing with 6 kills, 12 digs and 7 set assists and Cee Cee Olsen ended up with 14 digs.

Against Silver Bay the Vikings won their games 25-15, 25-15 and 25-16. Ashley Deschampe led the way with 14 kills and 14 digs. Bekah Laky had 13 set assists and 14 digs while Taylor Ryden finished with 7 set assists. Ali Iverson also contributed 5 kills to the all-around team effort.

So far Head Coach Pam Taylor likes what she has seen from her players, especially their team hustle and effort. Taylor and her two assistants Kasia Schmidt and Sharon Dorr have a good group of athletes to work with, but they have their work cut out for them to reach last years’ 20-4 mark.

The Vikings played Thursday, September 8 at home against Esko. Their next home game is against Mesabi East on September 19. The varsity game begins at 7 p.m.
