Viking volleyball goes 2-1

Last Thursday, September 25, the Cook County High School Viking volleyball team traveled to Moose Lake to face the mighty Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels and lost a close match 3 games to 2.

The Vikings won big in the first game 25-9 over the Rebels but lost big 25-12 in the second game. The third game was a barnburner with Moose Lake winning 27-25. Both teams went on long point-scoring runs in this game.

In the fourth game the Vikings got back on track and won 25-20. The Rebels came back and won the fifth and deciding game game 15-9.

For the game freshman Meredith Sutton had 8 kills and 7 ace serves. Linden Sutton finished with 9 kills and Britta Andress finished with 8 kills and 6 solo blocks.

Silver Bay

On Monday, September 29 the Vikings traveled to Silver Bay to play against the rapidly improving Mariner team.

Game one was won by the Vikings 25-22 but the Mariners came back to win the second game 25-13. The Vikings closed out the contest winning the third game 25-11 and the fourth game 25-18. Throughout the contest the Vikings were sluggish and off their usual game, said one parent who attended the match.

Britta Andress had 6 kills, Meredith Sutton 10 kills and 7 ace serves and Maddy Roy had 5 ace serves.

Lakeview Christian

Playing at home against Lakeview Christian on Tuesday night, September 30, the Vikings won the first game 25-14. Britta Andress got several nice blocks in the game and Carrie Palmer and Alex Slanga served well.

Game two was tied 12-12 and Lakeview looked like it was finding its game, going over the top of the Viking spikers and finding holes in the Viking defense. But Jami Sjogren got the team going when she served for 4 straight points, two of which weren’t returned, and Meredith Sutton hit two big spikes in the Vikings’ run as they pulled to a 19-13 lead. Next Andress spiked for the Vikings’ 20th point before Lakeview scored its 14th point. The Vikings led 21-14 when Andress reeled off four nice serves including one ace to end the game 25-14 in favor if the Vikings.

Game 3 was a dogfight throughout. Lakeview Christian pushed to a 7-4 early lead and held on as the Vikings evened the score at 12-12 before surging to a 17-12 lead. The teams played back and forth for the next 3 points and the Vikings were down 20-14, then 22-15 and 22-18 before Linden Sutton hammered home two big spikes and Meredith Sutton’s serve started undoing the Lions. Before no time at all the score was 23-23 and then the Vikings took their first lead, rallying to win 26-24 over a game Lakeview Christian team.

Carrie Palmer and Madison Roy had good nights in the backcourt while Alex Slanga served well throughout the contest and also played well setting the ball to her taller teammates. Lily Gruber- Schulz also had some big spikes and showed good touch tipping the ball over Lakeview’s blockers a couple of times.

Carrie Palmer ended with 4 ace serves, Meredith Sutton 11 kills, Jami Sjogren 4 ace serves, Alex Slanga 8 set assists and Maddy Roy finished with 5 ace serves and 7 set assists.

The Viking win brings their record on the year to 9 wins and 5 losses.

Next up for the busy Vikings was a game against South Ridge on Thursday (after press time) October 2 and then they traveled to a tournament on October 4 in Two Harbors. They play at home during Homecoming Week. On October 7 they face the Floodwood Polar Bears. Varsity play begins at 6:30 p.m. Go Vikings!
