The CCHS Viking track team opened its 2017 season after just two weeks of practice with the only indoor meet of the year at UW-Superior. And as is traditionally the case, it is right at the start of our spring break resulting in only about one-third of the team competing. Nevertheless, we had some outstanding performances against 10 of our Polar League competitors.
The star of the meet was junior distance runner Maya McHugh. Maya has done well over her long track and cross country career at CCHS, but this was perhaps her best performance to date. In a thrilling 800-meter race, she hung on to Carlton standout Brittny Hillstrom, and sprinted past her in the finishing stretch to win in an excellent early season time of 2:42.7. Maya also ran a solid open 400-meter time of 1:09.2, placing 3rd, right ahead of 8th-grade teammate Zoe Nonnemacher who ran 1:09.8.
Louise Ramberg, also part of our strong 8th grade group, placed 3rd in the girls’ mile, with a personal best of 6:13.5. Louise also had a nice 800-meter run of 2:53.9. Ninth-grader Chloe Blackburn continued her amazing improvement, running a 7:18.9 mile, and coming back with a 3:18.9 800 meter run, just ahead of teammate Cece Chmelik, who ran 3:19.0. Cece combined with Maya, Zoe, and Louise to run a 5:02 4×400 relay, placing 5th.
Freshman sprinter Jack Haussner led our boys’ contingent, running a 57.9 400 meter dash, claiming 3rd place in a huge field. He also turned in a solid 26.4 performance in the 200-meter dash. Freshman Henry DeArruda-Weaver had a number of solid performances, including a 65.2 in the 400-meter run. Jron Tamanaha led our distance runners with a 6:08 mile, while Sam Meyer finished in 6:30. Eighth-graders Jack Willis and Tanner DeBoer got good experience in the dashes in this varsity meet. Jack’s best performance was a 1:16.3 in the 400, while Tanner did a nice job in the 200 with a 34.9. A tired foursome of Jack, Jron, Henry and Sam closed the meet for the Vikings with a 4:39 in the 4×400 relay, duplicating the girls’ 5th place finish.
After spring break, the 35-plus tracksters will return to practice and get ready for the busy outdoor season, starting with the Esko early season meet on April 11, weather permitting.
