Although the Viking track team consists of almost 40 participants this season, only 12 made it down to the Polar League Indoor at UW Superior. It’s not that they weren’t willing; it’s just that the meet fell on a spring break weekend. Despite the small numbers, we still got some quality performances

Maya McHugh definitely had the performance of the day, winning the girls’ 800 meter run in 2:46.3. She ran a great race, staying in touch for the early laps, and then tracking down the lead girl from Carlton on the last lap for a dramatic win. Earlier, she teamed up with Molly Thomas, Zoe Nonnemacher and Alyssa Martinson in the 4×800 relay for a 4th place finish in 12:06. The same girls’ relay team came back with a 3rd place finish in the 4×400 with a time of 5:04.3

Meanwhile, our junior high boys contingent of Vaughn Swindlehurst, Jack Haussner, Henry DeArruda- Weaver and Kevin Viren also earned a 4th place finish in the boys’ 4×800 with a time of 11:33.9. They ran the 4×400 in 5:03.

Shot put throwing sisters Alicia and Hailey Smith did a nice job throwing. Alicia set a personal best of 27’11”, while younger sister Hailey put it out to 17’10” in her first meet.

A last minute team of Molly, Zoe, Claire LaVigne and Halle Lamb showed promise running 2:13.8 in the 4×200.

Individual girls’ performance were highlighted by Zoe’s 8.5 and Claire’s 9.1 run in the 55 meter dash; Molly’s 1:12.9 in the 400; and Claire’s 31.1 in the 200. For the boys, Jack’s 28.9 in the 200 and Henry’s 1:09 in the 400 were notable.
