The Vikings headed down to Two Harbors on April 28 for their first outdoor meet of the season. They were able to compete against some very good teams – Mesabi East and Two Harbors were the top two teams of this meet with 13 teams all together.

Our girls finished in 8th place and our boys finished in 12th place.

With our young team consisting mostly of 7th, 8th, and 9th graders it is an adventure for these kids to race against competition from the other schools that consist of many upper classmen.

Our girls’ 4x800m relay team (Sarah Toftey, Linnea Henrikson, Lucy Callender, and Ellen Callender) finished in 6th place with a time of 13:26. Our 4×400 relay team (Sophie Eliasen, Molly Thomas, Maya McHugh, and Sarah Toftey) finished in 4th place with a time of 4:42. This will be a fun team to watch throughout the season. They have been working on polishing their handoffs and they were executed very smoothly during this race.

We have a couple of outstanding ladies who performed well as individuals. Sophie Eliasen, an 8th grader, came in 2nd place in the 100-meter dash (13.5 sec.) and 2nd place in the 200-meter dash (28.2 sec.).

Molly Thomas, a 10th grader, came in 3rd place in the 400- meter dash with a time of 66.1 seconds.

Maya McHugh ran a solid and consistent mile and finished in 4th place and in 6 minutes and 15 seconds.

Our boys’ 4×800 m relay team ran well and finished in 6th place in 10 minutes 6 seconds. This team consisted of Leif Anderson, Will Surbaugh, Jack Haussner, and Finn Garry.

We also had three brave boys try the 300-meter hurdles, which is quite a feat since they are intimidating in height, especially for the growing 7th and 8th grade boys. Jack Haussner led the group with a time of 58.6 seconds. He was followed by 7th grader Ole Sorenson in 66.1 seconds and Henry DeArruda- Wharton in 67.9 seconds. They had a good first go at it and now we will be able to dial in their technique as the season continues.

It was a good opening to the season. We had another meet May 2 at Esko followed by a meet May 8 at Denfeld High School in Duluth at 4 p.m. Come and cheer on our Vikes!
