The sixth seed Cook County High School boys’ varsity tennis team traveled to third seed Marshall High School, Thursday, May 19, to play their first section team tournament match. The Marshall Hilltoppers proved to be too strong for the Vikings and came away with a 6-1 victory. The Viking players continued to show improvement, but it wasn’t enough against a more experienced and deep Marshall squad.

At No. 1 singles, undefeated junior captain David Bergstrom (CC) earned his right to be the top seed in the Section 7A Individual Tournament, next week, defeating junior Joey Kronzer (M), 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 2 singles, eighth-grader Lars Scannell lost a tough match to senior Matt Goldschmidt (M), 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 (tiebreaker). Lars was slowed by a sore heel during the second set, and lost for only the second time, this season.

At No. 3 singles, seventh-grader Pete Summers ran into a very strong opponent, losing to junior Nick Sengbush (M), 6-0, 6-0.

Head Coach John Muus gathers his team around him as they prepare for their section match against the Marshall Hilltoppers. The Vikings lost 6-1, but picked up valuable experience for next year. No one graduates off of this year’s team and many of the members are blessed with a lot of skill for their ages and should be a force to reckon with in the coming years. Only Junior David Bergstrom advanced to the Section finals, where he is ranked first at the No. 1 singles position.

At No. 2 doubles, eighth-graders Daniel Ahrendt and Jamie Wick (CC) were defeated by junior Brian Anderson and sophomore Killian McKee (M), 6-2, 6-4.

The Vikings had to again forfeit their No. 4 singles match and the No. 3 doubles match, for lack of players.

The CCHS boys’ varsity tennis team had six players (2 singles and 2 doubles) competing in the Section 7A Individual Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 24 and 25 at Hibbing.
