The young CCHS girls’ varsity tennis team traveled to Eveleth-Gilbert and Virginia on September 26 to again face a couple of stronger and more experienced tennis teams. The Vikings lost 7-0 to both Section 7A teams.
The Viking girls have had a difficult time winning games this season because of their youth and inexperience, but they are gaining some valuable match-play experience which will help them continue to develop as tennis players. The team lost a couple of its more experienced players (Molly and Libby Zafft) last week, and now has 10 players, eight of whom are first-year players, including five seventh graders. Junior captain Cecilia Schnobrich continues to lead the young tennis team, but it can be discouraging for all the players when they have to compete against older, more experienced opponents.
Coach John Muus has been encouraged by the progress of the young Viking players and continues to emphasize steady improvement instead of wins and losses. He sees a bright future for this team if the players continue to work hard on their skills and get some much-needed matchplay experience. Some of the girls have had an opportunity to hit and play against local adult women tennis players of all ages and skill levels. This local community support will only make our varsity tennis program stronger. The girls and adults have enjoyed the friendly competition and the opportunity to share an enjoyment for this great lifetime sport!
The next scheduled match is Wednesday, Oct. 5, 3:00 p.m., at the Cook County public tennis courts. The CCHS girls’ varsity tennis team will be taking on the Duluth Denfeld Hunters. Come and support our young team at their one home tennis match! Go Vikes!
