Down 8-0 before they even had a chance to bat, things didn’t look good for the Vikings in their home field matchup against the McGregor Mercs.
The game was played Tuesday, May 3 at the Rec Park campground.
However auspicious the start was, the game turned around on a few swings of the bat. None bigger than Katie Pecks center field blast that cleared the fences in the first, driving in two runs. The Vikings scored five runs in the first and despite trailing 8-5, it was game on.
It was all Vikings in the second inning as the team rallied for 11 runs while holding McGregor to two.
However, the Mercs stormed back with seven runs in the third to knot the score at 16-16. The Vikings essentially ended the game with 12 runs in the fourth while holding McGregor scoreless. The Mercs scored one more run in the fifth but were down by ten and the game was called because of the tenrun rule.
A happy Viking team earned their first victory of the year with a 28-18 win.
Maggie Smith was the winning pitcher. Maggie gave up five hits and 18 runs over five innings while striking out two.
Allie Duclos had three hits and two RBI’s to lead the Vikings. Amelia Brune and Maggie Smith each had two hits and one RBI. Grete Youngdahl was one for three with two walks and two RBI’s. Emmalli Myers walked three times and had one RBI on a sacrifice.
Morgan Starkey had one walk and two RBIs on hard hit balls. Charlet Waver didn’t get a hit, but she was 4-4 at the plate with four walks. Kallie Anderson walked twice and had one RBI in two at bats.
Ava Guida led the Mercs with two hits in four plate appearances.
The Vikings wreaked havoc when they reach first, stealing 17 bases. Charlet Waver led the way with four steals, Maggie Smith three, Amelia Brune three, Kallie Anderson two, Katie Peck two, and Morgan Starkey, Emmalli Myers, and Allie Duclos each had one stolen base.
McGregor committed 21 errors and the Vikings 12.
The Vikings play Ely at home on Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m. and then face the Mariners at home on Monday, May 10. The game against Silver Bay starts at 4 p.m.
