The Cook County High School girls’ varsity softball team was the host team to the North Woods Grizzlies on Thursday, May 13, in a game that saw a lot of scoring.
North Woods got off to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. The Grizzlies scored one in the second and three in the third while the Vikings were unable to get their offense going.
The Vikings finally tacked on three runs in the fourth and made the score 8-3 going into the fifth inning.
In the Vikings turn at bat in the fifth inning Anna Helemrson reached first on an error and Emmalli Myers walked. Doubles by Katie Peck and Hattie Crotteau and a single by Morgan Starkey brought in seven runs.
However, the Vikings big inning was bested by North Woods, who added eight runs to their total in the fifth.
The Grizzlies tacked on one run in the sixth and added three more in the seventh while the Vikings could only muster one more run in the seventh inning. When the game ended the Vikings were down 20-11.
Northwoods ended with 14 hits while the Vikings finished with ten hits.
Katie Peck took the mound for the Vikings. Katie lasted three innings. She gave up three hits while allowing eight runs and striking out two. Coming out of the bullpen in relief was Kallie Anderson. Kallie pitched four innings, giving up 11 hits and 12 runs while striking out two.
Four Vikings, Morgan Starkey, Katie Peck, Hattie Crotteau, and Amelia Brune each ended with two hits in the game. Anna Helmerson and Allie Duclos each had one hit for the Vikings.
North Woods batters walked nine times while the Vikings only received two walks.
The Vikings finished with seven strikeouts to four for Northwoods and eight Vikings had at least one error in the game.
