The Barnum Bombers lived up to their name, as they put up nine runs in the first inning against the Vikings in a game played at the Grand Marais Recreation Park on Tuesday, May 2.
A warm wind and temperatures near 60 degrees F greeted players and fans alike. It was a nice reprieve from the snow, wind, and when it isn’t snowing, a cold, wind-driven rain. But the weather, like the score, quickly turned as the wind switched and the temps fell quickly like the runs coming across the plate for the Bombers.
All told, Barnum recorded 22 runs on six hits, nine walks, seven hit batters, and seven errors from the Vikings to take the victory 22-3 in four innings. The Vikings collected three hits in the game.
Freshman Abbie Crawford took the mound for the Vikings and had some trouble with control. Whatever, Crawford is an exceptional athlete with a lively arm, and with some reps, she is going to be a great pitcher. All pitchers go through rough patches and early struggles. There are no exceptions.
In the third inning, Maranda Deschampe made two astute backto back fielding plays at third base, taking balls out of the dirt and throwing batters out at home plate. Unfortunately, the Vikings had some drops on catchable balls. This too is to be expected. The team has been driven inside because of the somewhat rude return of winter and has had to prepare in the gym, and that hasn’t given the players much chance to practice fielding high pop-ups that drift in the wind.
Next up for the Vikings is a game against South Ridge at South Ridge on Thursday, May 4. On Saturday, May 6 the Vikings play Ely at the Rec Park in a contest that starts at noon. Tuesday, May 9 the Vikings square off against the Two Harbors Agates at 4 p.m. in another home game and then on Thursday, May 11 McGregor comes to the Rec Park to play the Vikings. That game will start at 4:30 p.m.
Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
