In an effort to get some games in before the season ends the Cook County High School girls’ fast pitch softball team has been logging more miles then Lindsay Lohan on an apology tour.

On Thursday, May 2, the Vikings played their first game of the season against Cromwell and won. However, the winning score wasn’t available at press time.

On Monday, May 6, the Vikings played Silver Bay at home and the young Vikings were 10-runned, losing 16-5 in 5 innings.

The next day they got on the bus to travel to Barnum and then Moose Lake/Willow River (MLWR). Against MLWR, the team gave up 3 runs in the first inning; 2 in the third inning; 4 in the fourth inning and 1 in the fifth inning to lose 10-0.

While the Vikings couldn’t generate any offense against MLWR, the team scored 15 runs against the Barnum Bombers who, unfortunately for the Vikings, managed to score 19 runs in an action-packed game.

“We were down 12-3 against Barnum and rallied back to tie the score 12-12,” said Assistant Coach Monica Schnobrich, adding, “It was an exciting game. All of the girls hit the ball well.”

Wielding hot bats for the Vikings were Megan Lehto, who went 2-3 with two RBIs (runs batted in) and Sarah Deschampe, who was 3-4 with 3 RBIs.

On Wednesday, May 8 the team got back on the bus and headed to McGregor to face the Mercuries. The team fell behind 1-0 in the first inning and was down 4-0 through 3 innings before rallying back and scored 3 runs in the 4th inning, and 2 in the 5th inning to take 5-4 lead in the 6th inning. Unfortunately McGregor scored 8 runs in the 6th while the Vikings could only muster 1 run and lost 12-6.

On Thursday, May 9 the Vikings were scheduled once again to take the field to play Carlton, this time at home, but rain was predicted so the kids might have gotten a rest.
