The Cook County girls’ softball team has been busy this spring. On Thursday, April 26 the girls squared off against Cromwell and put on a clinic, winning 29-8.
Madison Roy was the winning pitcher in a game where the Vikings had more offense then they needed. Cromwell has yet to win a game this year and the Vikings made sure they weren’t the first to lose to the Cardinals, who suffer from a lack of pitching and have a young team.
The following day the Vikings traveled to Two Harbors and lost 10-0. Two Harbors had a dominant pitcher in this game, Courtney Kimball. Kimball struck out nine Vikings in five innings and shut the Viking batters down.
As short handed as the Vikings varsity is—and yes, there is a good group of youngsters coming up—the Vikings lost leading hitter Anna Carman for the year. She is out with an injury to her back. This is a big loss for the Vikings because Carman is not only talented in the field but is one of the Vikings’ best hitters.

Maddy Roy did a great job catching in the Barnum game. The ball was wet and slippery and the day cold and windy. Still, Roy held onto most of the pitches, or got a glove on them and stopped them.
Next up was Barnum. The Bombers played the Vikings at the Recreation Park ball field on May 1 on a wet, cold, windy day. Viking pitcher Sarissa Falk had trouble holding onto the slippery ball and was replaced by Madison Roy in the third inning. Libby Zafft took Roy’s spot at catcher and the Vikings played from a deep hole. Still, the team generated some excitement when Signe Larson belted a home run and Wieben connected for a triple. Wieben was driven home by Megan Lehto’s single.
It wasn’t nearly enough, however, as Barnum 10-runned the Vikings, winning 15-3.
The Vikings record is now 4-4.
The Vikings traveled to Silver Bay on Thursday, May 4, then face(d) McGregor at home the next night at 4 p.m. They play Two Harbors at home on Tuesday, May 8. The game starts at 4 p.m.
Come out and cheer on the Vikings!
