Longtime softball nemesis Silver Bay finally fell to the Cook County High School girl’s softball team on Thursday, May 5.

The Vikings trailed the whole game until the thrilling 7th inning.

But let’s start at the beginning. Silver Bay took a 5-3 lead after the first inning of play. Each team scored a run in the second inning and Silver Bay added 4 more runs in the third while the Vikings managed to grab two runs of their own.

Trailing 10-6, the Vikings hoped to slow Silver Bay down in the fourth, but the Mariners scored 3 more runs in the crucial fourth inning while holding the Vikings scoreless.

“Here we go again,” thought Head Coach Jessie Anderson. The Vikings haven’t beaten their nearest neighbor in too many years to count, although they have played them close several times in the last half decade.

Down 13-6, the Vikings hoped to gain a few runs back in the fifth inning. But neither team scored. With only two innings to play, the game looked bleak for the Vikings.

Going into the sixth inning the Viking bats came alive and, along with a few fielding errors from the Mariners, the Vikings managed to score 7 runs while holding their rival scoreless.

With the score knotted at 13, the Vikings again stopped the Mariners from scoring in the 7th inning. That was the third straight inning the Vikings held the high powered Mariners offense scoreless. Needing only one run to win, the Viking bats responded and one run was scored to end the game.

The Vikings notched their third win of the season 14-13 over a stunned Silver Bay team.

Once she settled down, Sarissa Falk pitched a great game for the Vikings. She also got 3 hits in four at bats. CeCe Schnobrich and Anna Carman also had 3 hits while Signe Larson and Rachel Wieben went 2-4 at the plate. Kristina Rude and Brea Boomer also got a hit in the game, giving every player on the team at least one hit for the game. Wieben ended the night with 4 RBIs while Carman had 3 RBIs.

Vikings lose to Two Harbors

The Viking girls hosted the Two Harbor’s Agates on Tuesday, May 10, and for once it didn’t rain (or snow) and the temperatures were in the low 50s. Both pitchers benefited from the warmer temperatures and both pretty well shut down the other team’s offense.

Neither team scored in the first inning and Two Harbors posted 2 runs in the second. The third and fourth innings flew by with each team pretty much shutting down the opposing players.

In the fifth inning, Cook County scored two runs on a double by Signe Larson. It would be Larson’s only hit of the game and just one of three hits collected by Viking players. Brea Boomer and Sarissa Falk were the only other Vikings to get a hit.

Tied 2-2 going into the sixth inning, the Vikings liked their chances. But the Agates erupted for 4 runs and shut the Vikings out the rest of the way, winning 6-2.

The following day Esko traveled to Cook County to play a make-up game. Both teams had big innings. The Vikings scored 6 runs in the third inning and Esko scored 10 runs in the fourth inning. Esko took the game 14-10.

Kristina Rude had the hot bat for the Vikings, going 4-5 at the plate. Signe Larson and Anna Carman went 2-4 and Brea Boomer, Rachel Wieben, Sarissa Falk and Theresa Morrin also each had one hit.
