The Junior Legion Cook County/Silver Bay team took a big lead over the Eveleth Golden Bears but had to hold on late to take a 7-6 win in a home game played Thursday, July 8.
After neither team scored in the first inning, the Vikings put two runners across home plate in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead and then let their guard down as Eveleth stormed back to score six in the sixth inning.
The Cook County/Silver Bay Junior Legion team scored first in the second inning off a single by Amos Falter that drove in a run. The three run third was led by an RBI single by Paul Dorr and a double by Jacob Carpenter brought in a run.
Jacob Carpenter took the win for the Vikings. Jacob pitched all seven innings, allowing eight hits and runs while striking out five and walking one.
Paul Dorr had three hits and three RBI’s and two stolen bases in the game. Jake Stadler ended with three hits and one RBI. Amos Falter, Ray Dressley, Jacob Carpenter, and Cy Oberholtzer also each had one hit in the game.
The Vikings struck out nine times while Eveleth batters fanned five times. Eveleth only had one walk in the game and one error. The Vikings ended with three errors and outhit the Golden Bears 10-8.
