The Viking girls’ basketball team faced two more opponents this past week and came away with two more wins. To date, their record is 11-1 on the year.
On Thursday, Jan. 13, the Vikings traveled to Mesabi East and played a sluggish first half of basketball, taking a 27-16 lead into the locker room. Coming out of the halftime, with the kinks worked out of their legs and some renewed energy, the Vikings clamped down on their defense and scored 39 points to finish the game with 66 points to Mesabi’s 39 points.
Senior Brea Boomer led the team in scoring with 22 points. She was followed by Ashley Deschampe, who hit for 15; Ailee Larson netted 11; Bekah Laky added 8; Theresa Morrin hit for 6; and Molly Zafft finished the scoring by tallying 4 points.
Hailee Lisegard scored 17 points for Mesabi. No other Mesabi player scored more than 4 points for the contest.
On Tuesday, Jan. 18, the Vikings traveled to Cromwell to face a pesky Cardinal team. According to Head Coach TJ Super, “The Vikings came out flat and struggled offensively to put the ball in the bucket. Pressure defense led to easy shots, but missed ‘bunnies’ kept the Vikings from stretching out their lead.”
Because the Vikings’ half-court tapping defense stalled, the Cardinals were able to stay within shouting distance of the Vikings. The Vikings had a 29-18 lead with 3½ minutes to play in the first half.
But, according to Super, he inserted Sophomore Ali Iverson into the line-up and she gave the spark the Vikings’ needed with, “exciting defense and aggressive rebounding.”
And if Iverson’s inspired play wasn’t enough, fellow sophomore Theresa Morrin, “took over the game, scoring 10 points in the Vikings’ first half, closing out a 16-0 run. She dominated the inside, scoring on put backs and with her back to the basket.”
The surge carried the Vikings into the halftime with a 45-18 lead. The Vikings finished the night with a 68-50 win, led by Ailee Larson’s 21 points. Morrin added 14; Ashley Deschampe chipped in 10; Brea Boomer scored 9; Bekah Laky hit for 8; Jessica Berg-Collman tossed in 3; and Iverson added 1 point.
In a battle of Titans, the Vikings face Floodwood Friday, Jan. 21 at 6:30. The Polar Bears come in as the top Section 7A team and the Vikings are right behind their nemesis in the polls. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
