The Cook County girls’ softball team has had another busy week of softball.

On Thursday, May 10 they played the Floodwood Polar Bears at home and lost a close contest 9-5. The next day, once again playing at home, they pounded the North East Range Nighthawks 17-7. Much of that was due to the Nighthawks’ pitchers, who walked a lot of Viking players. Overall, as young as the Vikings are, the Nighthawks field an even younger team.

The Vikings lost a tight game to the South Ridge Panthers 6-4 on Monday, May 15 at Southridge.

Sarissa Falk pitched a good game for the Vikings, but the team couldn’t score quite enough runs to pull the game out. “We had the bases loaded in the last inning but couldn’t score,” said Assistant Coach Monica Schnobrich.

For the game Falk had 4 strikeouts and no walks. Maddy Roy and Rachel Wieben each had key hits for the Vikes.

The young Viking squad is playing without star catcher Anna Carman, who is out with an injury to her back and has also lost Alexis Eliasen to a back injury. But stepping up and playing great softball is eighth-grader Madison Roy who is filling in for Carman at catcher. And if Madison doesn’t quite have Anna’s arm, she has been a huge presence with her bat.

Two other young players who have contributed a lot are Sarah Deschampe and Lexi Palmer, who are both hitting well, said Schnobrich.

Junior pitcher Sarissa Falk has made most of the starts for the Vikings this year, and has kept her team in most of the games. “But errors are hurting us,” said Schnobrich.

One player who has been very consistent with her glove is second baseman CeCe Olson, the Vikings lone senior on the team. “CeCe has a good glove. She’s been doing a good job for us all year at second base,” Schnobrich said.

Libby Zafft, the younger sister of sprint star Molly Zafft, has been running for Roy and stealing bases for the Vikings. Libby, said Schnobrich, “is fast just like her big sister.”

The Vikings will play two more games this week and then the playoffs will start. They will graduate one player, CeCce Olson, their fine second baseman.

“We will miss CeCe,” said Schnobrich. “She has provided us with much leadership and she is a heady player.”

The Vikings are 5-8 overall and 4-7 in the Polar League Conference. They are in sixth place out of 10 teams in the conference.

“Overall we are better than we were last year,” Schnobrich said.
