Using the phrase “A good defense generates a good offense,” the Vikings swept through the Hill City/Northland Storm, well, like a storm.
The Vikings swarmed the Hill City players, hounding them on defense which made for more turnovers than a small French bakery could make in one day. Only these turnovers weren’t square pieces of dough with a sweet savory filling that was folded in half and baked or deep fried.
These turnovers consisted of the Vikings intercepting passes, stealing the ball off the dribble, or taking the ball from a Storm player’s grasp.
However, the Storm players might have at times felt like French pastry in an oven, as the Vikings turned up the heat on their defense.
Sometimes the Vikings played man, sometimes zone, and sometimes they put on a full court press. One thing the Vikings didn’t do, until late in the game, was give Hill City much of chance to score. At halftime the lead was 47-10. If not for some liberal substituting by Head Coach Kelly Hawsen, the final score of 80-34 could have been much worse.
Once again, Ariana Poyirier led the way with 35 points, many of those coming off of steals where she would drive to the basket for layups. In all, Ariana had three 3-point baskets and the rest came pretty much from driving to the hoop.
The Vikings made 28 two’s and five 3-point shots in the game.
MaKenzie Fairbanks ended her night with 13 points, Rhonnie Poyirier had 13, Paisley Smith 12, Makenzie Morrison three, and Katie Peck had two points to round out the scoring for the Vikings.
Lainee Spangler, a freshman, led the way for Hill City/Northland with nine points.
Southridge is up next.
