As expected, the Cook County girls’ team had little trouble with the Wrenshall Wrens on Thursday, March 3, winning 88-19.
The game was played in Duluth on a neutral court.
The Wrens came out fired up, taking a 3-0 lead over the Vikings, “But then we went on a nice 50-0 run to put the game away,” said Head Coach T.J. Super.
The Vikings led 60-9 at halftime. Senior Brea Boomer and junior Ashley Deschampe led the Vikings in firsthalf points with 18 each.
The second half was highlighted by Brea Boomer who scored her 1,000th career point when she was fouled, went to the line, and calmly drained a free throw to put her over the millennium mark.
“Boomer is the second player this year to eclipse this milestone, joining Deschampe who hit it earlier this season,” said Super.
Boomer is the seventh girl in school history, and the fifth in the last five years, to reach this prestigious mark.
After being down 3-0, how did the game turn so fast for the Vikings? The team’s patented smothering half-court trap forced the Wrens into many turnovers and that led to lots of easy layups for the Vikings.
Ashley Deschampe and Brea Boomer each tallied 21 points to lead the Vikings in scoring. Ailee Larson hit for 14 points, while Taylor Ryden and Molly Zafft each had 6, and Theresa Morrin, Bekah Laky, Ali Iverson and Kaitlynn Linnell all had 4 points. Breanna Peterson also scored 2 points.
Maria Burcar led the Wrens in scoring with 11 points.
Vikes push past Albrook
The Vikings faced Albrook in Hibbing on Saturday, March 5 and maybe it was the long bus ride to Hibbing, but the girls took the first half to warm-up, get in gear, and then run away from the Albrook Falcons.
Cook County came in sporting a 19-3 record, including two 20-point victories over their 10-12 opponents, so it figured to be Cook County’s night.
However, the Falcons apparently didn’t pay attention to the team’s record and played the Vikings even for pretty much the first half.
“Their wide 2-3 zone gave us some problems, don’t know why, but it did,” said Head Coach Super.
“I think our passing was a little hesitant because of nerves and we missed a lot of free throws. If we had made our free throws in the first half we would have been up by 20 points at the half and it would have been a whole different game,” Super said.
With five minutes to go in the first half, Albrook trailed by 6 points. But the Vikings went on a little run and headed to the locker room up 36-22.
The second half was all Vikings.
“We got some steals and defensive rebounds that led to fast break layups,” said Super, adding, “but more than that it was an intensity issue that led to good things. Brea Boomer also took over the game inside in the second half, getting nearly every rebound, both offense and defense, and scored 19 points.
“Bekah Laky and Theresa Morrin also played really well. Both scored 12 points and made some big shots. Bekah did a great job on their post player, not allowing her a basket until midway through the second half. And Ailee Larson played well, also, scoring 12 points and playing good defense. Ashley Deschampe also scored 14 points and Taylor Ryden did a really good job coming off the bench and gave us energy.
“Having five girls in double figures is a real nice stat at this time of the year. Seeing young girls step it up in the pressure situations and not just depending on one or two girls to score is important,” said Super.
For the night Boomer ended up with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals. Laky contributed 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals while Ailee ended her evening with 12 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. Deschampe scored 14 points and had 5 rebounds while Morrin had 12 points, 5 rebounds and went two of two from the 3-point line.
The Vikings pushed on in playoffs with a score of 74-34.
