The Cook County High School softball team traveled to Carlton on Thursday, April 12, to face the perennially tough Carlton Bulldogs and fell to the Dogs, 12-4.
The first 3 innings of play were owned by Carlton as they scored 2 runs in the first, 1 run in the second and added 2 more runs in the third.
Down 5-0 going into the fourth inning, the Vikings staged a comeback to score 4 runs and briefly made a game of it. But Carlton promptly added 2 more runs in the fourth, then tagged on 3 more in the fifth and 2 more in the sixth inning, shutting out CCHS the rest of the way.
For the Vikings the game was a bit of a let down. The night before they had beaten Moose Lake-Willow River in a thriller in their home opener, but that game might have cost Viking pitcher, junior Sarissa Falk, some zip on her ball because she had less than 24 hours to recover before facing the Bulldogs.
Despite not scoring a lot of runs, the Vikings banged out 9 hits against Carlton’s top pitcher. Cece Schnobrich led the way going 3-4 at the plate. Signe Larson, Falk, Anna Carman, Megan Lehto, Alexis Eliasen and Maddy Roy also had one hit in the game.
The Vikings committed 3 errors while Carlton committed 1 error. Both Falk and Bodin, her counter part, recorded four strikeouts, but Falk had one hit batter and issued 3 walks while throwing 71 pitches. Bodin threw 48 pitches and gave up one walk.
Mariners beat Vikes at home
On Friday, April 20 the girls were back home facing the Silver Bay Mariners. The Mariners scored 1 run in the first inning, added 3 more runs in the third and 2 more in the fourth when the Vikings, now down 6-0, finally got on the scoreboard with 3 runs in the fourth inning.
The Vikings brought the Mariners lead down to 2 runs when they held their rivals scoreless in the 5th inning and then scored 1 run of their own. But the Mariners blew the game wide open when they scored 5 runs in the sixth inning then added 2 more runs in the seventh inning. The Vikings tacked two more runs onto their total in the seventh inning but fell 13-8 to the Mariners.
Anna Carman led all Viking hitters by going 3 – 4 with one home run. Sarissa Falk was 2-4 while CeCe Olsen, Cece Schnobrich and Megan Lehto each had a hit in the game. Sarissa Falk recorded 6 strikeouts in the game.
Vikings back on top against Hilltoppers
The Vikings were back in action the next day in a double header at home against the Marshall Hilltoppers. With the defense making plays behind her and the Vikings’ offense in high gear, junior pitcher Sarissa Falk had little trouble with the Marshall Hilltoppers and the Vikings took the first contest 13-4. The Vikings had two big innings, scoring 4 runs in the second and 6 runs in the sixth inning.
Rachel Wieben led Viking hitters with a perfect 3-3 at the plate. Once again Anna Carman went 3-4 with a triple and a home run and Cece Schnobrich was 3-5 with a double. Lexie Palmer was 2-4 while CeCe Olsen and Sarah Deschampe each had one hit in the game. Falk threw an excellent game, recording 9 strikeouts in 6 innings.
The Vikings scored 6 runs in the third and 6 runs in the fourth innings to take a commanding lead in the Vikings’ double-header against Marshall.
Anna Carman and Lexi Palmer led Viking batters with 3 hits while Cece Schnobrich, Megan Lehto and Maddy Roy each had two hits in the contest. Roy was the winning pitcher for the Vikings and gave up only® 8 hits. The Vikings won 18-7 over the Hilltoppers.
