The Cook County girls’ fastpitch softball team traveled to Silver Bay on Friday, May 14, to take on their nearest neighbors in a game of North Shore rivals.
Through three innings the game was close, with Silver Bay leading our Vikings 3-1. The Mariners tacked on one more run in the fourth and then exploded for six runs in the fifth inning. One more Mariner run in the sixth was enough for the game to be called because of the ten-run rule and the Vikings fell 11-1.
The Vikings lone run and only lead came when Allie Duclos grounded out, which scored one run in the first inning.
Once again Katie Peck was on the mound for the Vikings. Katie pitched five and two-thirds innings. She gave up eight hits, allowed 11 runs while striking out six Mariner batters.
Katie led the team in hitting by going one for two at the plate.
The Mariners big inning came off singles by Katie Carpenter, Velcheff, Sullivan and an error.
The Mariners had a big day on the base paths, stealing ten bases.
The Vikings had three errors while Silver Bay wasn’t credited with any errors. Mariner players were walked eight times while the Vikings only received three walks.
Katie Carpenter and Hope Ernest led the Mariners with two RBIs each.
