Viking girls’ basketball wins one, loses one

Far left: Sarah Toftey made a nice move to get open for this shot which she made against the South Ridge Panthers. Left: Emily Jacobsen always works in the paint to get free for a basket. No one takes more punishment in a game than Jacobsen, but she never complains. Above: Bayley Cox had her best game of the season against the Panthers, filling up the stat box with her scoring, rebounding, and playing great on defense.

The Cook County Vikings girls’ basketball team played two games over the past week, beating South Ridge at home and losing to Cromwell-Wright in an away game.

In front of an appreciative home crowd, the Vikings overpowered the South Ridge Panthers on Friday, December 16, smothering the Panthers on defense, controlling the boards, and running their offense not quite to perfection, but in a very efficient manner.

Seniors Emily Jacobsen and Bayley Cox, and freshman Abbie Crawford controlled the paint on both ends of the floor, defending well, picking up rebounds and scoring on putbacks. Crawford made some nice outside shots in the game.

Guard play by Sophie Eliasen, Hannah Toftey, Maya McHugh and Sarah Toftey was outstanding as the Vikings won going away 64 to 47. Eliasen repeatedly drove to the hoop, using her quickness to get by defenders to make lay-ups. Alyssa Spry and Jasmine Smith also saw plenty of action in the game.

No stats were available for the game.

The Vikings traveled to Cromwell on Monday, December 19 to face the unbeaten Cardinals who were 8-0 before playing the Vikings.

Cromwell never let the Vikings get started and beat the Vikings 79-23. Jacobsen, the Vikings’ leading scorer, was held in check for much of the game. So too was Sophie Eliasen.

The Vikings’ record is now 1-2 as they head into the Christmas break. With nine players on the varsity, the team is thin in depth, but as they get more conditioning, the team should do well absent any injuries.

The Vikings will play in the Two Harbors Invitational on December 29. Their first opponent will be Duluth Marshall in a game that will start at 2:30 p.m.

Coming back after the break the Vikings will take the floor at home on January 3 at 4:45 p.m. to face the Silver Bay Mariners in a contest of North Shore rivals. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
