Viking football team prepares for 9-man football

With the CCHS Vikings moving to 9-man football next fall, the coaching staff and 17 players decided to attend football camp at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) to learn more about the offense and defense used in the game. With fewer students in school, and fewer student-athletes to draw from, the Cook County High School football team hasn’t had a lot of success the last couple of years. But a change from 11-man to 9-man football should help, although there is bound to be a fairly steep learning curve in a game that tends to have quite a bit more high-octane offense than 11-man football.

Helping to offset that change, the Vikings sent 17 players to the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) annual football team camp during the week of June 15.

“We used the time to learn and practice new offensive and defensive schemes that they will be running as a 9-man football team,” said Head Coach Mitch Dorr.

The majority of the time was spent scrimmaging against other 9-man teams from Ogilvie, the Northern Freeze, and Carlton, said Dorr.

At the end of the camp the Viking coaching staff left feeling very optimistic about their team and the transition to 9-man, said Dorr.
