The Cook County High School Vikings football team traveled to Esko last week to take on the larger, more experienced Eskimos and the results were somewhat predictable, with Esko winning 30-6.
Despite the difference on the scoreboard, the Vikings moved the ball quite well, gaining 293 yards through the air and on the ground. Sophomore Peter Warren carried the pigskin 16 times for 117 yards.
The speedy half-back had a long run of 29 yards while averaging 7.3 yards per carry.
Dylan Quaife gained 83 yards catching and running the ball and Collin Everson caught three balls for 54 yards. Sophomore quarterback Kale Boomer ran 14 times for 39 yards and threw for 61 yards.
“We kind of watched the first half to see if we could compete. You just can’t do that against a good team like Esko,” said Viking head coach Mitch Dorr.
For the game Esko rushed 44 times for an average of 8.1 yards per carry while the Vikings ran the ball 43 times for a very respectable 4.8 yards per carry.
Esko’s offense netted 422 yards of total offense with 355 yards gained on a strong ground attack.
Thesecond half was better for the Vikes. “We opened up the half with a 17-play 76 yard nine-and-one-half minute drive. We played Esko 8-6 in the second half and will look to build off that this week,” Dorr said.
On defense Everson led the way with three unassisted tackles and eight assisted tackles. Warren was in on eight assists and had two unassisted tackles. Trevor Pehrson, Nick Austin, Quaife, Boomer, Mike Sjogren, Clay Johnson, Justin Goldstein, Bradley VanDoren and Brandon Dahl all had totals ranging from three to seven tackles.
“I thought Everson really played well on both sides of the ball,” noted Dorr.
Everson was the only Viking to record one sack for the game while Boomer recorded one pass breakup. Quaife did recover an Esko fumble, however, no one on the Vikings team intercepted a pass.
The Vikings played Barnum on Friday, Sept. 10 at home. Results of that game will be in next week’s paper.
