The Viking boys’ basketball team played three games in the last week with mixed results. But as young as they are, every game is a chance to gain experience and grow, even if sometimes growing pains hurt. Northeast Range

It’s been a lot of years since a CCHS boys’ basketball team scored over 80 points in a game, but that’s just what the Vikings did in their 83-40 win over Northeast Range in Babbitt on Thursday, December 14.

The Vikings led 28-20 at the half before scorching the net and tossing in 55 second half points to turn the game into a blowout.

Will Ramberg had a great game against the Rangers. The junior forward scored 26 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and had five steals in the win.

Pete Sutton put in 19 points; Jordan Porter contributed 16 points and nine rebounds; Caide Northrup had 11 points and five assists; Adam Dorr scored six points and made six assists; Devon Premo made four points and pulled down seven rebounds; and Vaughn Swindlehurst chipped in one point in the win.

“We brought seven guys up to Northeast Range, and after a slow first half, we played a great second half,” said head coach Mitch Dorr. “Northeast Range really had a difficult time matching up with Will on the inside. Our guys did a nice job of getting him the ball and letting him work.”

Vikings lose to the Falcons

The next day the Vikings played the St. Ignatius Falcons at home and lost 76-63 to a senior squad of high school players. Canadians have one more year of high school than American students, so they often graduate at 19.

At halftime the Vikings trailed by 10 points, 38-28, but the second half was almost even as the Vikings put in 35 to 38 points.

Once again Ramberg led the team with 23 points while pulling down 16 rebounds, Pete Sutton scored 16 points, Jordan Porter had 15 points and seven rebounds, Caide Northrup chipped in seven points, and Adam Dorr contributed six assists.

Said Coach Dorr, “We had our same seven guys the very next day against a very physical Thunder Bay team. We really competed well against their older squad, but down the stretch, I think our legs caught up with us. I was very proud of how we stayed in the game and competed.” Cromwell flies by Vikings

Cromwell Cardinal players scored lay-up after lay-up on a frustrated Viking team in the December 18 home game.

Viking head coach Mitch Dorr’s varsity team is talented but young, and youth showed in the home game as the quicker Cardinal players scored most of their 72 points by getting to the basket off of the dribble or a short pass inside.

Taking the floor for the Vikings was Caide Northrup, a ninth-grader, three sophomores Pete Sutton, Adam Dorr, and Jordan Porter, and junior forward Will Ramberg.

Early in the contest, the Vikings trailed 12-4, but baskets by Will Ramberg, Pete Sutton, and Jordan Porter kept the Vikings close as they trailed 15-13 with eight minutes to play in the half. Cromwell went on an 11-0 run and kept their foot on the gas pedal as they went into the locker room up 39-17.

Trailing 48-17, it took the Vikings almost five minutes to get their first basket, a two-point shot from Will Ramberg, and score their first points of the second half.

Down 62-24, Jordan Porter made five baskets in a row on a variety of excellent moves, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings lost 72-43.

Next up for the Vikings is an away game on Dec. 21 at South Ridge. The boys will then play in a holiday tournament at Two Harbors on Dec. 28-29. Their first home game of the new year will be Jan. 5 against the Two Harbors Agates. The game will start at 4:45 p.m.

Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
