Viking boys win first game of the season

A young CCHS boys’ basketball team traveled to Two Harbors on Friday, December 8 to face the Agates in the Vikings’ opening game of the season.

Jordan Porter led the team in scoring with 20 points. Both Pete Sutton and Will Ramberg each contributed 15 points, followed by Dyami Blackwell, 8 and Caide Northrup, who had five points.

Carson Wenger led Two Harbors with 17 points.

“I thought for our first game as a very young squad, that once we settled into the game, we played very well,” said head coach Mitch Dorr. “We got off to a slow start, as we trailed 0-12. Dyami hit two threes to wake us up and then we started to play.”

The Vikings fought back and only trailed 32-30 at halftime, but managed to outscore the Agates 33-28 in the second half to win 63-60.

“Adam and Caide both did a pretty good job of handling the press, and Will Ramberg really led well throughout the game,” coach Dorr said.

One of the keys to victory was the Vikings’ ability to hit the three-point shot. Sutton had three, Porter two, Ramberg two and Northrup put in one shot from behind the three-point line.

“At the end, Jordan just made a really good play and made a tremendously deep shot to win it for us. He had one heck of a game,” said Dorr.

Coach Dorr started one freshman, off-guard Caide Northrup, two sophomores, point guard Adam Dorr and shooting guard Pete Sutton, and two juniors, forward Will Ramberg and Jordan Porter, who also plays forward.

“Our first guy off the bench was Dyami Blackwell,” said coach Dorr. “He is fighting tendinitis and is playing in short stretches only.”

For now, that’s the lineup for the varsity. Coach Dorr said he has, “Four guys ineligible for various reasons.” Until those players get eligible, the Vikings will have a thin bench, but some younger players will get some significant experience in the meantime.
