The Cook County High School boys’ basketball team got back on the wining track last Friday, Feb. 4 in Two Harbors when they beat the Agates in a low scoring game, 36-29.
In the first half baskets were as hard to come by as balloons in a pin factory. After 20 minutes of play, the Vikings took a 12-10 lead into the break.
When asked about his team’s slow start, Head Coach Mitch Dorr said, “Teams are packing in their zone defenses against us right now and we are not making our outside shots. It has been frustrating, but we will get the ship in the right direction.”
David Bergstrom led the team in scoring with 13 points. He was followed by Ryan Martinson with 8 points, Colin Everson chipped in 7 points, Dylan Quaife netted 6 points and Kale Boomer finished with 2 points.
Once again, Dorr praised the play of junior guard David Bergstrom. “Despite not shooting incredibly well, David was the difference in the game with 12 rebounds and 7 steals. He plays well each and every night.
“I was also very happy with the play of Johnny Jacobsen off the bench. He continues to work hard for us on the boards,” Dorr said.
Jacobsen is just a freshman, and one of the bright lights on a very young Viking team that starts two sophomores and two juniors.
“Our defense is okay, but we really need to work out the kinks on offense,” added Dorr.
The Vikings are now 5-4 in conference play and have an overall record of 9-7. Although the Vikings are ranked 8th in the conference, they have the same 5-4 record as Silver Bay, which is in 4th place right now in the Polar League. Silver Bay sports an 8-7 record on the season and both teams have split in their series. Two Harbors is 1-15 on the year.
The boys play McGregor tonight (Feb. 11) at 6:30 at home.
