There was a lot more than pride on the line when the visiting Vikings played Mountain Iron- Buhl (MIB) on Friday the13th. Both District 9 Blue nine-man teams came into the game with 5-1 records, and the winner would certainly make their path smoother to advance in the upcoming Section 7A tournament than the loser.
Vikings’ junior quarterback Josh Prom scored a touchdown in the first quarter on a five-yard run, and Dillon Sjogren carried the ball in for the two-point conversion.
The Vikings led 8-0 until the fourth quarter. Early in the fourth quarter Sporn shook free and ran 22 yards to the end zone. Mike Burton caught a two-point conversion pass to make the score 16-0.
Mountain Iron came right back, however, converting a 65-yard pass play for a touchdown and then converting the two-point conversion to make the score 16-8. The Vikings held on and took the 16-8 victory in a hard-fought contest.
Sporn was the team’s offensive workhorse. He rushed 34 times and gained 224 yards. For his efforts he was named Viking Offensive Player of the Game. Sporn also recorded eight tackles and had one quarterback sack in the game.
Mike Burton earned Viking Defensive Player of the Game honors. Burton recorded 13 total tackles, five of them unassisted.
