It looked like a long season of basketball was showing when the Cook County Vikings played the highly ranked Barnum Bombers at home on Friday, February 3. The usual energy and enthusiasm the Vikings bring to the court was missing, and the Vikings quickly fell behind in a contest that should have been much closer than it was.
Senior Barnum guard Claire Rodgers scored 9 of Barnum’s first 13 points and the Bombers led the Vikes 17-4 in the first few minutes of the game. The Vikings continued to fall behind as they repeatedly turned the ball over, failed to rebound and just couldn’t make wide-open shots. They went into the locker room down 33-14.
The second half started out much better when senior guard Ashley Deschampe scored three baskets in a row to pull the Vikings closer. However, that nice little run and much better defense did little to put the Vikings back in the game.
Although the Vikings would hold Barnum to 6 points in the first nine minutes of the second half, the Vikings just couldn’t generate much offense either, and netted just 10 points in that time. The Vikings only turned the ball over three times in the second half compared to 11 times in the first half, but they could never find the basket, even when they were shooting near the hoop.
The closest the Vikings would get to the Bombers was 14 points before the Bombers pulled away to a 25-point win.
Ashley Deschampe led the Vikings with 15 points. Breana Peterson and Leah Utities scored 4 points each. Lily Gruber-Schulz and Bekah Laky each scored 3 points while Theresa Morrin and Jessica Berg-Collman scored 2 points.
The Vikings’ record fell to 12-7 overall and 7-3 in the conference. The Barnum Bombers record is 18-4 and they sport a 10-0 conference record.
Duluth Marshall came to town at press time on Thursday, February 9 and the Vikings played Floodwood the next night in Floodwood.
