The Cook County High School girls’ fast pitch softball team started the season with a win over the always-tough Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels last Tuesday, April 10 at the Grand Marais Recreation Park.

Senior pitcher Sarissa Falk (and a capable defense behind her) led the way, holding Moose Lake to 1 run through six innings. Meanwhile, the Vikings took advantage of timely hits, moving batters with walks and errors to build up a 10-1 lead until the 7th inning when Moose Lake rallied to score 5 runs. It wasn’t enough though, and the Vikings didn’t have to bat in the seventh, taking the game 10-6.

The Vikings took a 1- 0 lead in the first inning before rallying for 5 runs in the second inning. Moose Lake scored a run in the second to make it 6-1. Neither team scored again until the Vikings pushed four runners across home plate to give the Vikings a 10-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Moose Lake rallied, but it was too little, too late.

“The sixth inning was really big for us,” said Head Coach Jessie Anderson, adding, “Their pitcher walked two batters and then hit Sarissa with a pitch to load the bases. Anna Carman batted next and hit a triple, clearing the bases. That’s what we need, key hits that lead to big rallies.”

Anderson also lauded the pitching of Falk. “Sarissa only gave up two walks. She stayed ahead of the count and kept the ball low. She struck out three batters on her changeup, which was really exciting. Overall she did a great job for us.”

Anderson also praised her team’s defense, “We only had one error for the game. Eighthgrader Maddy Roy filled in for our only senior, CeCe Olsen, who was sick, and did a great job at second base. Overall I saw a lot of good things in the game. It was a great way to start the season.”

Signe Larson led Viking batters by going 2-3 and scoring 3 runs. Sarissa Falk went 1-2 with a double, Anna Carman was 1-4 with a triple, Megan Lehto was 1-3 with a double and Sarah Deschampe was 1-3 with a single.
