Sometimes an old idea, even one without a shred of technology, is a good idea, and shouldn’t be forgotten or abandoned.
But apparently that’s what happened to the Vial of Life (VOL), an old idea that needs to be resuscitated, said Cook County Ambulance Director Steve DuChien.
DuChien said he and his crew haven’t found any VOLs in any patients’ homes in years and he would like to see that change for all concerned parties.
A Vial of Life is simple, but may be the most important thing a person possesses in times of a medical crisis, DuChien said.
Residents are asked to fill out a form (or paper) listing their medications, medical history, and emergency contact information and keep it in a Vial of Life container on top of their refrigerator. If someone has a history of heart condition, they should also have a current “12 lead EKG” included, he said.
“The key is to make sure the medical information is current,” said DuChien.
Keeping it on top of the refrigerator is also important, he said. “That way, when emergency personnel arrive they know where to check for information prior to treating the patient.”
If you would like to pick up a Vial of Life container and medical information form to fill out, simply stop by the registration desk at the Cook County North Shore Hospital and ask for one.
