The “boys of summer” enjoyed an excellent season of baseball, reported head coach Arleigh Jorgenson.
“Our VFW team just returned from our District 8 Sub-District Tournament in Grand Rapids, where they finished fourth behind Virginia, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing,” said Jorgenson. “A victory over International Falls behind the pitching of Tristen Bockovich started us off. Next up, the Vikings held a 2-0 lead over Grand Rapids heading into the sixth inning behind Andrew Miller on the mound.”
However, Grand Rapids scored three times in the sixth inning to overtake the Vikings.
“This put us in the loser’s bracket for a run at the third spot, which would have carried us into the District Tournament in Ely the following weekend,” said Jorgenson. “Greenway was the first hurdle. Dillon Sjogren led the way on the mound and prevailed. Hibbing, the final team in the way, however, was too much for us in the loser’s bracket.
“Our boys played hard to the end and left knowing how very much they had accomplished over the summer.”
Coach Jorgenson said his team started the season off with a loss to Virginia but came back with a sweep over Eveleth. Next, they took wins over Ely and BEST.
“Ely evened the score with a victory in Grand Marais, but a win over Deer River completed the regular season,” the coach said.
Summer baseball is about having fun and growing in your level of play; both were accomplished, said the coach.
“We improved in all categories of play over the summer: pitching, defense, and offense. Next spring cannot get here soon enough!”
As far as the recent alumni Fisherman’s Picnic game, Coach Jorgenson said, “Several VFW players joined the younger alumni team to fill in last Friday. I think I can report that our alumni feel pretty proud to support our current players, and, to a man, look forward to coming back for another go of it during Fisherman’s Picnic of 2018!”
