Veterans Day ceremonies to be held throughout the county



Grand Portage American Legion Post 2009 will host “A Tribute to those who served” on Monday, November 12.

The ceremony will start at 10:30 a.m. with a Drum Ceremony, followed by raising the flag(s) and the playing of the U.S. and Canadian national anthems at 10:45 a.m. At 10:55 there will be a Veterans Day Observance followed by a moment of silence and an Honor Song.

Orlando Swader will be the guest speaker. A short five-minute film will follow him. There will be refreshments and food inside at noon at the American Legion Post 2009 which is located at 8495 E. Highway 61, mile marker 146.

Everyone is welcome.

As a “Thank you to the heroes who fought for our freedom,” Gene’s Foods, located at 431 Highway 61 in Grand Marais, is offering a free soup and sandwich to all military members on Monday, November 12.

Cook County School District I.S.D. 166 is holding a Veterans Day tribute at 2 p.m., on Monday, November 12, and the community is invited to attend.

The middle school band and high school band will play patriotic songs, and the choir will sing, said PK-12 assistant principal Mitch Dorr.

A keynote speaker was still being sought at the time this article was written.

The CCHS Student Council is also collecting cookies for troops. They will be receiving cookies up until the time of the Veterans Day concert at the school. Cook County High School will also be working with the Ladies Auxiliary to collect clothes for homeless veterans between now and Veterans Day.

A Veterans Day dinner will be held at Grandma Ray’s (at the former American Legion building) in Grand Marais from 4-6 p.m. on November 12. Veterans and their spouse will receive a free 2-piece chicken dinner courtesy of the American Legion Auxiliary.

If you would like to donate lightly used warm, winter clothing, please bring it to Grandma Ray’s November 10-12. The clothing will be collected by the Auxiliary and given to a group from the Twin Cities who helps homeless veterans.
