Grand Portage American Legion Post 2009 will host “A Tribute to those who served” on November 11, Veterans Day.
The observance will start at 10:30 a.m. with a Drum Ceremony, followed by raising the flag and the playing of the U.S. and Canadian national anthems at 10:45 a.m. At 10:55 there will be a Veterans Day Observance followed by a moment of silence. Grand Portage Veterans Service Officer Clarence Everson will be the guest speaker. There will be refreshments inside at noon at the American Legion Post 2009 which is located at 8495 E. Highway 61, mile marker 146. Everyone is welcome.
As a “Thank you to the heroes who fought for our freedom,” Gene’s Foods, located at 431 Highway 61 in Grand Marais, is offering a free soup and sandwich to all military members on Veterans Day.
Cook County School District I.S.D. 166 is holding a Veterans Day tribute at 2 p.m., and the community is invited to attend, but not all of the plans are in place right now, said Kris Hoffman, Cook County School counselor, a veteran who served in the National Guard and is the coordinator of this year’s event.
“If the volleyball team wins their next two games and goes to state, then the band will not play, because they will be at state with the team. (Plan A they play, plan B, they don’t). In the event that they don’t play, we will have a limited and shorter selection of music but our choir under the direction of Erika Ternes will be present and has a few songs picked out already. If the band is not there, we also have Treg Axtell playing Taps to conclude our service.
“Our Plan A speaker was booked for a different event, and ours was the further drive, so we don’t have an official keynote speaker. We are planning to possibly do a video recorded speech from a commencement, presentation, etc…. or I may get the transcript of one and read it. I will still be the master of ceremonies. The event still starts at 2 p.m. and should be done around 3 p.m. People are invited to start arriving at 1:45 p.m.
The CCHS Student Council is also collecting cookies for troops. They will be receiving cookies up until the time of the Veterans Day concert at the school. Hoffman said, “Cook County High School will be working with the Ladies Auxiliary to collect clothes for homeless veterans between now and Veterans Day.”
Two Veterans Day dinners will be held at Grandma Ray’s (at the former American Legion building) in Grand Marais from 4 to 6 p.m. The first will be held Friday, November 10 where veterans will receive a free two-piece chicken dinner. On Saturday, November 11, veterans will receive a free roast beef dinner. Both meals are courtesy of the American Legion Auxiliary.
If you would like to donate lightly used warm winter clothing, bring it to Grandma Ray’s on Friday, November 10. The clothing will be collected by the Auxiliary and given to a group from the Twin Cities which helps homeless veterans.
