Veterans Day ceremonies set for Monday





The traditional flag-raising ceremony will be held at sunrise on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11 at the Grand Portage Veterans Monument at the Log School. The Grand Portage Bay American Legion will host other Veterans Day events beginning with a drum ceremony at 10:30 a.m.

The public is invited to join veterans for ceremonies and remembrances on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11.

In Grand Portage, the flag will be raised at daylight at the Veterans Monument at the log school. At 10:30 a.m., a drum ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Grand Portage Bay American Legion Post 2009 followed by a moment of silence at 11 a.m. At 11:05 a.m., Melvin Gagnon will give a brief speech.

Refreshments will follow, provided by the Grand Portage American Legion Auxiliary. A raffle drawing will also be held. The post is located at mile marker 146.

In Grand Marais, a Veterans Day concert will be held at 2 p.m. in the Cook County High School Varsity Gym. The program will feature the CCHS band and American Legion Post 413. All veterans and community members are welcome to attend this free concert.

Student Councils will be collecting “Cookies for Troops” donations that will be sent to service men and women on active duty. Packages of cookies or cash donations may be dropped off on your way into the concert.

Finally, a Veterans Day dinner will be held Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at American Legion Post 413 on First Avenue West. The menu includes roast beef, mashed potatoes and all the fixin’s. The meal is free for veterans, and $7 for non-vets.
