August was an active month in Cook County for people who enjoy the sport of tennis. In addition to its weekly hitting clinics and drop-in doubles, the Cook County Tennis Association (CCTA) hosted three major events.

First was the 40th annual Fisherman’s Picnic Tennis tournament that took place August 5-7 at the Grand Marais courts. A total of 38 players participated, with most of them coming from outside Cook County. As in past years, the quality of the tennis action was very good with many matches being tightly contested.

Nine different events were held with May Hays from Northfield, Minnesota winning the Women’s Open Singles; Benjamin McKimm from Hutchinson, Minnesota winning the Men’s Open Singles; Tim Thiesen from Maple Grove, Minnesota defending his title in the Men’s 50 Singles; Will and William Joynes from New Hope/Golden Valley, Minnesota winning the Men’s Open Doubles; Leeann Ryder and Jordee Matson from Thunder Bay, Ontario winning the Women’s Open Doubles; Ryder and Brad Salatino from Thunder Bay winning the Mixed Open Doubles; Doug Graham and Bill Hennessy from Cook County defending their title in the Men’s 70 Doubles; Albert and Lowena Lograno from Chisholm, Minnesota winning the NTRP Mixed 7.0 Doubles; and Albert Lograno and Dean Edstrom from Chisholm/Aurora, Minnesota winning the Men’s NTRP 7.0 Doubles.

On August 28, 30 tennis enthusiasts from Cook County, Silver Bay and Thunder Bay accepted the CCTA’s invitation to come to Grand Marais to play in their annual North Shore Social Doubles event. Players were divided according to ability into seven teams, which competed against each other in a round robin format to win the most games and finish in first place. The weather was beautiful and the tennis was fun but competitive.

The team of Mark Piovesana (Thunder Bay), Lisa Topp (Silver Bay), Don Grant (Cook County) and Chris Mattila (Silver Bay) were the overall winners. After the tennis, everyone adjourned to the Cook County Community Center for a potluck dinner provided by the CCTA and its members.

The final tennis event of the month was the CCTA Annual Meeting, which was held at the Harbor House Grill on August 31. Forty CCTA members and guests attended and enjoyed a wonderful dinner. Christine Nickels, Community Programs Director from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Northern Division, was the guest speaker. Tony Stingley, USTA Northern Director of Training and Outreach, also attended. CCTA President Bill Hennessy chaired the meeting.

Gene Glader, Marcia Cushmore, Richard Swanson, Butch Piepho, Mike Carlson, and Casey Fitchett were unanimously elected to two-year terms on the CCTA Board of Directors. Special awards were given to Frankie Jarchow, Carl Johnson, Marlys Johnson, and Lee Bergstrom as recognition of their significant contributions over many years to the CCTA and the sport of tennis in Cook County.

Although the CCTA has no other major events scheduled this year, weekly drop-in doubles on Monday, Wednesday and Friday will continue for the rest of September. Players are encouraged to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather and come out and play on the best tennis courts on the North Shore!
