Funeral services for Vernon H. Backlund, 87, of Irmo, were held Monday, February 8, 2016 at Temples Halloran Funeral Home Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, South Carolina. Reverend Richard Humphries officiated.
Born in Two Harbors, Minnesota, he was the son of the late Simon Backlund and Elizabeth Skoog Backlund, Swedish immigrants who settled in northern Minnesota. He grew up working in the family grocery store in northern Minnesota that he later owned. Vernon owned and operated a meat market in Phoenix and then moved to Irmo, South Carolina in early 1994. He also worked part-time with Meetze Plumbing.
Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Columbia.
Surviving are his sons, Dale Backlund of Peachtree, Georgia, Gary Backlund of Sumter, South Carolina and Mark Backlund of Irmo, South Carolina; sister, Virginia Eckstrom of Columbia; grandson, Eric; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Those who preceded him include his late wife, Virginia and a brother, George.
