A Grand Portage man, Dean Deschampe Jr., 36, was injured when the Jeep Grand Cherokee he was driving left the roadway at Highway 61 mile marker 132 at approximately 2:54 p.m. on Saturday, July 2. Cook County Law Enforcement received 911 calls from two nearby residences where passing motorists had pulled in to make emergency calls. From the preliminary call, it was believed that there was a passenger in the vehicle, but when emergency responders arrived, they determined that Deschampe was alone.
Cook County Ambulance, the Hovland and Colvill Fire Departments and the Hovland Safety Team Operational Patrol (STOP) all responded. The fire departments were released from the scene about an hour later and the STOP team stayed on scene to assist with traffic as the vehicle was pulled from the ditch. The STOP team cleared the scene at 5:34 p.m.
Deschampe was transported to Cook County North Shore Hospital. He has since been released.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Deschampe was traveling north in the Jeep when his vehicle left the road. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
