Vincent Joseph Dardis, 25, of Grand Marais somehow escaped injury when the 2005 Chevy Cobalt he was driving rolled over on the Gunflint Trail and caught on fire.
The accident was reported to Cook County Law Enforcement at 4:02 a.m. on October 10 by Dardis who hitched a ride with a passing car to use the payphone at Nor’wester Lodge. Dardis said his car was on fire when he left it.
The Gunflint Trail Fire Department responded and found the car about five miles south of Trail Center, already destroyed by the fire. The fire department made sure the fire was out and cleared the debris from the roadway.
The Gunflint Trail Ambulance also responded, however Dardis was not transported to the hospital.
As they traveled to the scene, Gunflint Trail Ambulance members informed Cook County Law Enforcement Dispatch that the road was very slippery. No citations were issued.
The rollover was so forceful that the engine came out of the car. Wally’s Towing of Grand Marais had to make two trips to clear the debris.
