It looks like it could be another good year for the Cook County I.S.D. 166 varsity Knowledge Bowl team.
In their first meet of the season, the I.S.D. 166 varsity Knowledge Bowl squad finished first and second at the competition held in Mountain Iron, Minnesota on Thursday, January 10.
All told there were 18 teams from four different schools: Cook County, Eveleth-Gilbert, South Ridge and International Falls.
CCHS Knowledge Bowl coaches are social studies teacher David Liechty and science teacher April Wahlstrom. Practices are generally held over lunch break or during study hall time. Mr. Liechty drove the kids to the meet in a mini school bus on Thursday while Ms. Wahlstrom stayed back home and taught school.
“Our teams finished in first and second place, despite missing two of our juniors who would’ve been prominent contributors,” said Mr. Liechty. “I rotated kids through both teams quite a bit,” he added.
CCHS students participating on Thursday were: Adam Dorr, Emma Gesch, Sylvia Berka, Lance Bartol, Greta Roth, Ella Hedstrom, Louise Ramberg, Lynden Blomberg, Adrian Howard-Larsen, and Kestrel Pollock.
CCHS has qualified for seven straight appearances at the State Knowledge Bowl meet. Last year the team recorded its highest finish ever by placing fourth in a deep and talented Class A field.
