Cook County High School Knowledge Bowl Coach April Wahlstrom is proud to announce that another knowledge bowl season is underway. The CCHS knowledge bowl competitors traveled to Mountain Iron, MN on January 19 to compete, fielding two teams, which finished in the top five—out of 23 teams.

Coach Wahlstrom explained the difference in Knowledge Bowl between varsity and junior varsity. She said the teams are smaller. Instead of five competitors and an alternate in each meet, the varsity knowledge bowl teams are limited to four. The questions are targeted toward 11th and 12th grade content and there is an extra round. “So they have to have more endurance,” said Wahlstrom.

The CCHS students stood up to the test. Wahlstrom said on the way to competition, it was agreed to divide into two teams rather than rotating students through as alternates. Team 1 was Ben Seaton, Kieran Scannell, Katrina Axtell, and Audrey Summers. Team 2 was Mara MacDonell, Daniel Ditmanson, and Sarah Larson.

Team 1 came in fourth place with 78 points and Team 2 came in fifth with 74.5 points during the Mountain Iron meet.

Wahlstrom said she and the other coaches—Dorie Carlson and TJ Super were very proud of the kids. “They had a blast and the teams were equally divided and they both kept flipping places. The students are excited because most of them are tenth graders and they are already performing very well,” said Wahlstrom.

The next varsity Knowledge Bowl meets are Feb. 9 and Feb. 16.
