Varsity cross country teams continue their winning ways

The North Shore Storm boys and girls cross country teams competed in a triangular meet last week in Two Harbors with both the varsity teams taking first place.

Boys’ varsity

In the boys’ 5k, Nate Bilben led the team to victory with a first-place finish in the varsity 5k. Nate ran 18:17, just holding off Carlton/Wrenshall runner Jack Riley, who was two seconds back.

The North Shore Storm had the low score of 23 while South Ridge was second with 41 and Carlton/Wrenshall placed third with 69 points when their top five runners’ places were added up.

In third was North Shore Storm runner Ian Thorpe, running 18:33. Kevin Viren placed fifth with a time of 18:55, Tate Crawford took sixth in 19:21, and Clay Thorpe was the team’s fifth placer, finishing eighth with a time of 19:40.

Jack Willis was the team’s sixth placer, taking 13th in 20:09. Kyler Hansen placed 15th in 20:20.

Girls’ varsity

The North Shore Storm girls’ varsity won the triangular meet with 29 points to South Ridge, 34, and Carlton/Wrenshall 66.

Addison Burckhardt of South Ridge took first place with a 5k time of 21:20. The North Shore Storm’s Cedar Gordon placed second with a fine time of 21:34. Lamar Gordon was fourth in 21:56, Autumn Smith sixth in 22:16, Louise Ramberg eighth in 22:33, Malin Anderson placed ninth in 22:35; Anna Hay was 11th at 23:09 and Jocelyn Carr placed 17th 24:03.

Girls’ junior varsity

In the girls’ junior varsity 5k race, North Shore Storm runner Jocelyn Carr crossed the finish line first in 24:03. Carr’s teammate London Smith placed second in 25:06.

Amery Oberg was 5th in 27:00; Kylie Viren was 7th in 27:22; and Cecelia Cmelik, 14th with a time of 29:04, rounded out the team’s scoring, giving the North Shore Storm a one-point victory over South Ridge, 29 to 30.

Other North Shore Storm finishers were Greta Roth in 16th with a time of 29:19; Bryn Fitzgerald- Wells placed 21st in 33:53, and Olivia Nesgoda was the 22nd finisher, crossing the line in 33:54 in the highly competitive race.

5k Boys’ junior varsity

North Shore Storm’s Elijah Smith won the 5k Junior Varsity 5k race with a time of 20:21. However, South Ridge runners placed the next three runners and won the team competition 25-32.

Brayden Schmidt placed fourth in 20:58; Tanner DeBoer was seventh in 21:20; Keean Selin was eighth in 21:25; Gus Han placed 12th in 22:09; Ben Obinger was 13th in 22:13; Jonah Schmidt was 14th in 22:20; Nicholas Swart placed 17th in 22:40; Jacob Door, 18th in 24:18; Haddon Taylor was 21st in 24:35; Ryan Bilben took 22nd in 27:22, and Avery Zimmer crossed the finish line in 28:33 to take 23rd.

3300m junior high girls

Hattie Crotteau just beat out teammate Rachael Dorr to win the girl’s 3300 meters Junior High girls’ race with a time of 16:52. Dorr was one second behind and in third was teammate Sophia Sheehan, who crossed the line 16:57. The North Shore Storm’s fourth and final runner was Shawanda Everson, who placed 10th with a time of 19:59: South Ridge won the competition with 15 points because the North Shore Storm couldn’t field a team of five runners.

3300m junior high boys

Sawyer Fierke Lepp, South Ridge, won the boys’ 3300-meter race with a time of 15:22, leading his team to a 16-51 victory.

Cody Lange took fifth place to lead his North Shore Storm teammates. Cody’s time was 15:36. Odin Hansen placed seventh in 16:47; Isaac Schmidt was ninth in 17:15; Vincent Samuelson was 13th in 20:49 and Reed Cruikshank finished 17th in 26:43.
