Let’s try this for perspective – what Alpine Racing looks like through the eyes of a racer and his or her coaches using race results from last week’s race at Giants Ridge. Step 1 – let’s have some racers near the top.

Race 1R ace 2 Total
39.67 37.53 1:17.20 1st Hermantown
40.19 37.75 1:17.84 2nd Brainerd
40.98 37.24 1:18.22 3rd Hermantown
40.33 38.08 1:18.41 4th Cook County/Silver Bay
40.94 38.27 1:19.31 5th Hermantown
40.72 38.76 1:19.48 6th Cook County/Silver Bay

That’s tight. What more narrative is required? Molly Rider took 4th and Signe Larson was 6th. Sure the results could have been switched up. But that’s ski racing. Overall, mission accomplished. Step 2 – let’s get our next group close

Race 1R ace 2T otal
44.77 44.64 1:29.41 11th Cook County/Silver Bay
46.16 44.11 1:30.27 12th Cook County/Silver Bay
50.32 45.84 136.16 20th Hermantown
Ava McMillan captures her first varsity score with a 12th place overall finish at Giants Ridge.

Ava McMillan captures her first varsity score with a 12th place overall finish at Giants Ridge.

Ali Boettcher took 11th place and Ava McMillan was 12th which provided Ava with her first team scoring opportunity in her young career. Again, objective met.

Step 3 – Who won the meet?

The top four skiers from each team qualifier as team scores. For example, if there are 100 skiers, first place is worth 100 points, 2nd place – 99 points. In this race, Hermantown inched out Cook County for 1st place by just 4 points. In ski racing, that’s pretty darn close.

And the boys. Team Objective – let’s be consistent and bunched tight. For team score, that can work well. Mission accomplished.

Race 1R ace 2 Total
39.95 38.27 1:18.22 14th Colin Berglund
40.28 39.48 1:19.76 19th Luke Fenwick
40.58 40.94 1:21.52 23rd Karl Ingebrigtsen
42.05 39.93 1:21.98 24th Dexter Yoki

Again, just a couple seconds separated the top four Cook County/Silver Bay Boys. And the boys placed four racers in the top 25 of the field. Not bad. The boys’ team finished 5th from nine strong overall teams.
