Vandalism at Grand Marais Golf ‘n Stuff

Grand Marais Golf ‘n Stuff is usually the place to go for some lighthearted fun. Unfortunately, sometime during the night between August 19 and 21, the mini-golf course was the scene of theft and vandalism. Cook County Law Enforcement was called at 3:29 p.m. on August 22 when the damage was discovered.

Missing was the chainsaw-carved eagle that was perched atop the “cave” at the mini-golf course’s 18th hole. An “open” sign by the hot dog cart was broken and another sign on the western edge of the property was knocked over. It appears the trespassers also attempted to steal another chainsaw figure, a bear at the 3rd hole, but were unsuccessful as it was chained down. The broken sign is valued at approximately $129 and the stolen eagle figure, $300.

Tom and Stefanie Crosby, owners of Grand Marais Golf ‘n Stuff, were saddened that anyone would vandalize the family-friendly facility. Tom Crosby said unfortunately it is not the first time there has been trespassing on the premises. It seems to happen late in the night—most likely after local bars close and there is foot traffic in the area. Fortunately in the past damage has been minimal.

“This was really bold, to come right onto the golf course and to climb up on the cave. They also took some time, trying to take the bear. They banged it up pretty good,” said Tom Crosby.

The Cook County Sheriff ’s Department encourages anyone who sees a chainsaw-carved eagle or who knows anything about the incident to contact Cook County Law Enforcement at (218) 387-3030.
