Vacations and fitness

Vacations and fitness are the buzz at the Senior Center this month.

My assistant Kristen has been on vacation all month traveling and relaxing in Tennessee. She comes back and I leave for a vacation to Laughlin, NV. I will be traveling with my husband, two daughters and Bill and Susan Shaffer.

I usually take my vacations in April to relax and regroup before the busy summer season starts. Plus this time I will be checking out a charter flight and shuttle to a casino resort to see if we want to add it to our trip itinerary at the Senior Center.

For me vacations are my mental “fitness” time, since I am still among the working group. Those who are retired can enjoy the mental “fitness” of getting out of town and seeing other areas. It always feels so good and refreshing just to drive to Duluth or Grand Portage, to see something other than town. We will have lots of fun, exciting trips planned to do just that this spring and summer. Watch the newsletters for more information on trips.

We received a grant from the Scott Hawkins Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. Since Scott Hawkins is an avid world traveler, we are using the funding towards travel scholarships in his honor.

In other “fitness” news, the water fitness classes at the Grand Marais swimming pool have been going well and those attending have been getting a workout. To help them get more out of their workouts, we have received a grant from the North Shore Health Care Foundation to purchase water fitness equipment. On order are dumbbell weights, aqua gloves, weight belts and swim noodles. The classes are looking forward to getting their new equipment.

The number of participants in the water fitness classes has far exceeded the numbers that instructor Kayla Gotchie, Park Manager Dave Tersteeg and I thought there would be. If you have not had a chance to check the classes out, you can come and join in anytime and work at your own pace.

Until next month take a little time to enjoy yourself and happy travels!
