Vacationing woman dies after fall

An Apple Valley woman vacationing at a rental cabin east of Tofte was found dead on the Lake Superior shore last week. Cook County Law Enforcement received a call from Jim Doring, 65, of Apple Valley on May 18, 2010 at 12:14 p.m., requesting an ambulance for his wife, Elizabeth Marie Doring, 61, who had fallen from a cliff.

Mrs. Doring had left the rental home at 6892 West Highway 61 early in the morning to take photos of the sunrise.

Cook County dispatch paged the Tofte First Responders, Cook County ambulance and Deputy Paul Spry. Deputy Spry arrived on the scene first and found that it was obvious that Mrs. Doring was deceased.

Recovery of her body was hindered by the steep terrain and the Sheriff Response Unit determined that recovery would be easier via boat and launched from the Taconite Harbor public access with assistance of DNR Conservation Officer Tom Wahlstrom. Several hours later, at 2:39 p.m., the woman’s body was transported to Cook County North Shore Hospital.

Sheriff Deputy Don Phillips said Doring’s death was obviously due to a fall. Apparently Doring was taking pictures and leaned against an unstable tree that gave way. She fell approximately 40-50 feet onto ledge rock. Phillips said there was no evidence of foul play.
